Do you know the water resistance for A watch?

Water resistance for watches is a measure of how well a watch can withstand exposure to water without being damaged. It is typically measured in meters or atmospheres (ATM) and indicates the depth to which a watch can be safely submerged.

The water resistance rating of a watch is usually indicated on the Watch Dial or case back, and it is important to note that water resistance is not a permanent feature. Over time, factors such as aging seals, temperature changes, damage to the case or crown, or exposure to chemicals can affect the water resistance of a watch.

ATM on Watch dial

Here are some common water resistance ratings and their corresponding capabilities:

1. 30 meters (3 ATM): Watches with this rating are splash resistant and can withstand light rain or accidental splashes. They are not suitable for swimming or any other water-related activities.

2. 50 meters (5 ATM): These watches are suitable for showering or swimming in shallow water. However, they are not suitable for diving or snorkeling.

3. 100 meters (10 ATM): Watches with this rating are suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports, but not for scuba diving.

4. 200 meters (20 ATM) or more: Watches with this rating are suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, including scuba diving.

There is one condition, above shower it means normal temperature water. you can't wear a watch for warm shower or hot tub or hot spring. it would damage the seals to expose the water in movement.

Water Resistant

It is important to note that water resistance ratings are based on laboratory tests under controlled conditions and may not always accurately reflect real-world usage. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer's guidelines and avoid exposing the watch to excessive water pressure or temperature changes to maintain its water resistance.

Therefore, it is recommended to regularly check the water resistance of your watch if it is your favorite and you want to keep it long for some anniversaries. if it is just a Fashion watch, I don't think it is necessary to check it every year.

As we all know the watch mainly are Metal, like stainless steel, Alloy, to make sure it is in good water-resistant. the gaskets are very important, like I ring under Watch Glass, O ring on caseback and O ring on Watch Crown too. there are 3 types of caseback in different water-resistance range and 2 types of crown too.

1. Snap on caseback, using the pressure to close the caseback on Watch Case , normally it is 3ATM for daily use. like DW watch.

2. Screws on caseback, there are 4-6 screws on caseback, with gasket, then use the screws to fit the caseback on case. normally it is 10ATM MAX. like Blue ballon watch.
3. Lock caseback, there are threaded and screwed to double seal, which can withstand more pressure. most Diving Watch are in lock caseback. like Seiko.

Crown : Pusher Crown and Screw Down Crown. pusher crown for normally 3ATM and 5ATM. screw down crown with 2 steps to secure to bear high pressure. it is suitable for Dive watch.
if up 30ATM, helium escape valves is necessary to ensure their integrity at greater depths.

I guess Now you have basic info for water resistance and what you need for your watch.
