There are 2 meteorites in watches industry: Gibeon and Muonionalusta. Gibeon, believed to have fallen to Earth in prehistoric times, was found in Namibia, Rolex and Omega brought Gibeon meteorite to this world. now due the law of Namibia, it is not allowed to be harvested. to up-value the cost of watches much when this news announced. while Muonionalusta, found in Sweden in 1906, is estimated to be about one million years old. We use this Muonionalusta meteorite.
Process of Meteorite dial is not a easy job. the stone of Meteorite itself is black and dull, somehow like the Iron metal solid piece. it is hard and brittle, due the thickness of Watch Dial in 0.4=0.5mm. it is quite easy to break the meteorite during production. I would like to say the wastage is quite high if you don't have skill to handle it. so the cutting and finishing the meteorite to be a nice pattern need a well-skilled master. the pattern of Meteorite like below is not just cut from meteorite. that requires the acid-wash treatment and highly polishing to show off that natural texture as we saw on dial.
The Meteorite with high iron is magnetic, so it has to be made by some treatment to anti- magnetic or rhodium-plated for use in watches.
