How many types of watch dial finishes do you know??

Watch Dial is the first part to catch your eyes when you look at it. pretty or not. you like or not. Classic or modern. this is what we said the first impression. then you would ask movement and see the Watch Case finishing and shape, bracelet and so on. the appearance of Watch Dials would make or break a watch. Generally, there are 7 common finishes on watch dials.

1. Matte, this is most simple and classic matte finished dial for more one hundred year. it is famous for rlx, omega,Panerai and etc. Matte dials have non reflective in any condition and they are much easier for reading the time by any glance. and Matte dial + transparent Watch Glass to show more advanced texture for a whole watch. from watch dial making process, there are several ways to make the matt finish. sandblasted or using a non-glossy coating/ink for dial.

2.Gloss. It is opposite to Matte. Glossy dials have a very strong reflective finish. such as Enamel surface, Onyx stone dial, porcelain or Lacquer. Rlx loves it. a lot of versions in glossy dials. and enamel dial is very very difficult to handle. once there is a dust or fingerprint, the dial ruins, can't use any more. others materials are great. 3. Sunray or Sunburst, It is very common watch dials. with nice ray line pattern and effect changed by the light in any angle. very sparking for high-class sunray dial.
to have this Sunray, before plating or paint color, dials need to be Polished by sunray machine to have this texture. Dl 52 7

4. Brushed, Normally the brushed finishing would be mixed with circled brushed or satin finish to have a good contrast to get 2 toned color on watch dial. it is more or less cool and metal style for some rebuild watches. Dl 140 6

5. Guilloche and Stamped patterns, the traditional Guilloche patterns were done by rose engine. it started in very early watchmaking in Switzerland. rose engine by hands, can be done in countless patterns, but each piece really cost time and money. some design dials, it takes 6-12 hours. one error would ruin the dial too. so that really needs a real Master for this dial and machine. Now most of them use the modernized with advanced technology. stamped the dial from a mold for the patterns. but it is machinery. not more hand making.

6. MOP, Mother of Pearl, it is a special Fancy watch dial for Dress Watch or Fashion watch. MOP sheets to be 0.2mm and stick with thin brass base, the total dial diameter are 0.4-0.45mm. if the MOP from deep ocean, the Shell would be in a lot of Luster for nice looking.

7. Skeleton, A design that exposes the inner workings of the watch through a cut-out watch dial. mainly for Mechanical watches to see the working of Mechanical movement, most of them for Man's casual watch, Tourbillon Watch and wind up Wrist Watch. These openworked or cutout in patterns also upgrade the watch too. Dl 200 7
